This is the world the French word "Canotage" evokes and that illustrator Maurice Dessertenne perfectly captured.

Days of pleasure boating in small row boats on the river, with a delicious drink waiting for you on the bank. Can you see yourself there?

This is a large format reprint of a lovely antique French dictionary plate showing a large variety of rowing boats, which illustrated the "Canotage" article of that 1922 dictionary (boating in French). 

The word "Canotage" doesn't have an exact translation (to my knowledge) in English as it specifically refers to "Canots", which are small rowing boats so it's more specific than just boating. It does include competition rowing, as shown in the various little vignettes depicted on these images. Interestingly, the next editions of these dictionaries use the modern word "aviron" for those, while "canotage" is kept for other kinds of rowboats.
